The human body contains trillions of cells that perform different jobs. For example, skin cells protect our internal organs from the environment, while muscle cells help our body move. Our genes are located inside these cells, and are the instruction manuals that create proteins to help our body grow and function. Human cells contain 20,000 to 25,000 protein-coding genes.
